Description
‘Cars Of The Future’ Coaster Set
“The Cars of the Future”.
Chrysler’s Plymouth, from 1928. The Ford Motor Company’s Fordor Sedan, from 1929. Studebaker, of the same vintage. And the Standard Super 10, a child of the 1950s. This set of four coasters offers a brief glimpse into the automobile advertisements of the past.
The Fordor, for instance, was sold on the basis of “the trim sturdiness of its lines and beautiful colours”. “An unusually good choice for the woman driver because it is so reliable, safe and easy to control. The Triplex shatter-proof glass windshield is an important safety feature,” the ad copy stated, concluding, “Five people can ride in comfort in this car.”
Meanwhile, the Plymouth was pitched as an unbeatable choice at its price point, promising “power, pick-up, smooth-ness, easy handling, safety, quietness and roominess” as well as “beauty and style”.
A more poignant detail is found lower down in the same advert, where the dealer’s address is listed. Two outlets are mentioned: the first at Kashmere Gate, Delhi; the second at The Mall — Lahore.
