Deconstructing runway looks for less isn’t new. A Hindustan Times article from 5th May 1929 shows that fashion-conscious Indian women have long sought affordable style. Titled “A Dress For Rupees Ten,” the column describes transforming a cotton sari by dyeing it black with red spots, adding a gold lace border, and pairing it with a pink blouse or white jumper. The ensemble is completed with red velvet Burmese slippers adorned with gold pompoms — all for under Rs. 10.
