Description
British-Dutch sculptor Clara Quein, noted for her prolific body of work, created over 500 busts and 30 full figures in her lifetime, with some of her finest pieces crafted in India. Born in England and trained across Europe, she first journeyed to India in 1935. There, she sculpted iconic figures like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and the Maharaja of Patiala. In this 1948 photograph, Quein is captured shaping Sardar Patel’s likeness, while her daughter Rhea, ever-present, watches on from the sidelines.
