In 1941, bamboo scaffolding covered the dome of the Taj Mahal. Was it to repair cracks, as claimed by the Archaeological Department, or to camouflage the monument from German and (later) Japanese bombers during World War II? Hindustan Times photographer Sanjay Sharma captured the “Taj in splints” on 28th April 1941, the scaffolding adding an eerie touch to its beauty.
