The Hindustan Times‘ front page on 20th April 1975 proudly declared: “India Enters Space Age”, as the nation’s first satellite, Aryabhata, began orbiting Earth. Named after the 5th-century mathematician Aryabhata, the report also featured a photograph of Dr Vikram Sarabhai, the visionary behind India’s space programme. Though he passed away in 1971, Sarabhai had long predicted India’s satellite future, laying the foundation for the country’s scientific strides. His legacy continues to inspire India’s space ambitions.
